More than 175 years ago, Albert Gallatin, the distinguished statesman sun Finance Minister under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, declared his intention to establish “in enormous and fast-growing it … a system of rational and practical education for all matching and courtesy was opened to all.” Founded in 1831, NYU is now one of the largest private universities in the United States. Of more than 3,000 colleges and universities in America, NYU is one of only 60 institutions of the distinguished membership in American universities.
158 students during the first semester of New York University, enrollment has grown to more than 40,000 students in 18 schools and colleges at five major centers in Manhattan and in sites in Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America. Today, students come from a union and from 133 foreign countries. Faculty, which initially included 14 professors (artist and inventor Samuel Morse FB included), now stands at over 3100 members full time to research and teaching includes the humanities, sciences and social sciences, law, medicine, business, education, fine arts, art studios and performing arts and film, music, social work, public administration, the ancient world, and the graduate and professional. With more than 2,500 courses, the university awards more than 25 different degrees. Although overall the University is large, schools and colleges, individuals are the units – any small to medium in size with its own traditions, programs, and faculty – and there are many communities that can be found in the New York University community based on interests, activities, and some experiences.
